A Day On The Farm

Every great recipe starts with great ingredients. As somebody who adheres to this principle, I always end up sourcing different ingredients from various sources. Being a resident of Long Island now, I’ve found the best produce to be had is directly from the source – we have tons of farms on the east end of the island.

A Day On A Farm

Recently my family & I spent a beautiful day out on Harbes Family Farm, located on north fork of the Island. Admittedly, these trips serve a several purposes, in that there was: fun for kids, the best corn we have ever eaten (!), fresh fruit & vegetables, and wine with cheese for parents. What else one could want from an afternoon?

My husband recently noted, that I don’t really feature our boys on this blog. And I realized that I do shelter them a little bit. I’m not really sure why that is; it wasn’t a conscious decision. So he suggested that we should do a reconnaissance mission to the farms, take some pictures, and feature my little men & some great ingredients. I liked the idea.

For purposes of this blog, I usually take photos of food but I do like to photograph people and events too. If you’re a regular reader of this blog you’ll know that I took some newborn photos of my second son few months ago. I also photographed this amazing event for Mezzetta few weeks ago.

So, off we were to the farm. If you live in the greater New York City area, this can be a great excursion for kids & parents alike. For the kids, they have so many awesome activities. They have animals small and big (bunnies, chicks, ducks, goats, sheep, pigs, cows etc…). At this one particular farm they also have stories about the animals, signing wagon trips, huge trampolines, spider webs and the best maze ever!

Our friends had been telling us about this one particular farm for a while, that there is this amazing farm on Long Island, which was great for kids, and that we all should go together; but for some reason we were never able to coordinate timing. When we ventured out on our own, I didn’t remember the name of the place. To make matters worse, when we decided to the farm, I couldn’t reach my friends to find out what was the name of this place (always happens).

Nevertheless, I did some research on the Internet and found this place. I wasn’t sure if it was the same place my friends told me about but it sounded super fun for kids. So, we took our boys and went. I think the photos will probably tell the story better than I can here; so I hope you’ll enjoy them….

Oh and on our ways back home we detoured to another farm, off the beaten path, for some real deal, raw milk and fresh eggs. It was super cool, and the richness of that milk reminds me of the kind I used to have growing up in Poland, It tastes totally different.

I’m sure we’ll be doing a return trip soon for apple and pumpkin picking. Even if we wanted to forget the trip, my four year old keeps talking about he farm so often, that we’ll definitely need to go back. I’d love to hear about other great family oriented places. And if you can marry in the sourcing of fresh food, then you have me won!
