Traditional Czech Recipe

Koláče

Koláče / kolache is one of the pillars of Central European baking and an important part of the local culture in the Czech Republic. Learn how to make sweet raised dough with three different, delicious homemade fillings.

Ingredients

Flour | Milk | Sugar | Lemon Butter | Egg | Rum | Cinnamon Powdered Sugar | Poppy Seeds Prunes | Cream Cheese Raisins | Almonds

PREPARE DOUGH Melt butter, activate yeast with milk and sugar, and let it bubble. Mix all the ingredients together and knead the dough, then let it rise until doubled.

PREPARE FILLINGS Prepare the poppy seed, cheese, and plum fillings, and set them aside. Then make streusel by blending flour, sugar, and cold butter into a crumbly texture.

ADD FILLING Shape dough into 24 balls, flatten, and create a well in the center for filling. Use a spoon or piping bag to fill each dough well with your chosen filling.

BAKE Place koláče on a prepared baking sheet, brush with egg, and top with streusel or almonds. Let rise for 10 minutes, then bake until golden.

Transfer the baked koláče to a cooling rack, dust with powdered sugar, and enjoy with milk, coffee, or tea.

Enjoy!
